Writers Block? Jump in the shower.

by Tara Fitness

First, I’d like to clear something up. I don’t like the term ‘writer’s block’. I don’t think we ever run out of words and I don’t think we ever lose the ability to create — but I do think when we feel ‘writer’s block’, we’re simply too overwhelmed by the goings on around us.

Every time I’m struggling to write, I take a shower.

For many of us, besides sleep, it’s the only time of day where we’re without stimulus… unless of course, you’re the kind of person who listens to music or a podcast while you’re in the shower. If that’s you, stop… you’re missing out.

The shower is that place where it’s just us and the four walls of the shower cubicle. And we shower every day, so what we do in the shower is as ingrained as a river running through a canyon.

Use routine to your advantage.

I use the same routine every time I get in the shower, so I don’t have to think about it. In fact, I think so little about what I’m doing that I often begin to consider if it’s time to get out of the shower then I wonder if I used the body wash. I can tell when I forgot to condition my hair, but my body doesn’t go smooth and silky after washing, so I never really know. I’m confident I regularly wash myself twice, just to be on the safe side.

I always get distracted in the shower, but not in a bad way. I get distracted by my thoughts. I’m genuinely considering putting a whiteboard in the shower because I think of so many things while I’m in there.

I actually thought of this post when I was in the shower — and two others during the same 5-minute shower (I know it should be 3 but like I said, I get distracted).

So if you’re struggling to write, switch off the world, jump in the shower and let your mind wander. You never know what you might find.
